Upsetting

Compressing a billet along its axis to increase diameter and reduce length — the first operation in making a disc or a ring.

Upsetting works the centre of the billet hardest, which is exactly where a cast structure needs it. It also produces the pancake from which a ring is pierced and rolled. The practical limit is buckling: unsupported, a billet upsets reliably up to about three times its diameter in length, beyond which it must be upset in stages or supported in a die.
