Ring Rolling
Growing a pierced doughnut into a seamless ring between a driven roll and a mandrel.
The wall is squeezed between the main roll and the mandrel while axial rolls control the height, so the ring grows in diameter as the section comes down. The resulting grain runs circumferentially, matching how a bearing race, gear rim or tower flange is loaded. Rolled rings avoid both the weld of a rolled-and-welded ring and the cut grain of a ring machined from plate.
