Stress Relief
A sub-critical soak that removes residual stress from forging, welding or rough machining without changing the properties.
Residual stress is what makes a long shaft move on the lathe after the first heavy cut. A soak at 550 to 650 °C with controlled heating and cooling rates relaxes it while leaving the tempered structure intact. On precision shafting it is scheduled between rough and finish machining, which is the difference between a part that holds its run-out in service and one that does not.
